Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
February 27, 2023
Haley reads off a list of available class subjects to the commission. She is in
favor of having preservation commission 101 and thinks that could be the first
class to watch and discuss. We could talk about the class in April.
User Experience Surveys
Dalia says a big observation from these surveys is there are a number of items
on the work plan that are linked. The user experience survey task that shows
why they use the program. The second task shows why they do not use the
program. The third level is adjusting the current grants. To adjust the grants, we
would need to go to City Council. He discusses what information would need to
be collected in order to give City Council justification of changing the grant
amount.
Dunlap asks who the target audience is for the survey
Dalia says there will be different groups of people participating in the survey. We
will try to use more people who have used the program.
Blue Parrot Sign
Anderson says they are still brainstorming possible locations for the sign. They
have been educating themselves on the background of this sign. He discusses
talking with the museum and the possibility of the sign going to them.
2023 Saving Places Conference
Dunlap says the conference was three days long. The conference gave
Colorado history in regards to preservation and how to work it into our program.
Some classes were dry and we did not learn much but there were some that
were very interesting. There were subjects discussed like why preservation is
beneficial for a town.
Haley says the conference theme was "Closer to the Heart." It gave the why
behind preservation and how it benefits us for various reasons. There was a
strong emphasis on amplifying all different voices throughout our history.
Sustainability was also a big piece of this conference. Downtowns are usually the
first areas that focus on preservation. The conference also touched on
affordability and density. Those were some of the themes that were in the
classes.
Brackett Hogstad says the themes are very high level but as we meet as a
body, we could lose sight of those. That is why we want to put some of these
themes in our work plan so it stays on our calendar. She reviews her staff memo
in the packet and different web links the commissioners can utilize to gather
more information from the conference.
Haley says history of Colorado has a goal of adding 150 sites by 2026. We
thought it would be great if the City has something to contribute by that deadline.
Items from Staff
Subcommittee Review Updates
5
