Winifred Davis died in 1963. She had survived her husband by over 27 years. Her heirs were
three sisters, one of whom lived in England and two of whom lived in Wales.
Romano Family Ownership, 1963-1974
In 1963, the estate of Winifred Davis sold 1021 La Farge to Carmen Romano (1906-1993) and
Ann Di Francia Romano (1907-1999). They were the owners and operators of the Rex Theatre
located at 817 Main St. from 1945 to 1972. However, they are known to have made their home
elsewhere in Louisville, so it appears that it was a rental. Louisville Times newspapers state that
Michael Pickett was a resident of 1021 La Farge during at least part of that period.
Later Owners
In 1974, Carmen and Ann Romano sold the property to Earl Donald and Ricky Pickett, who sold
it the same day to Emil and Barbara Malfitano. The Malfitanos sold it in 1977 to Diane
Kuligowski. She sold it in in 1983 to Kerry L. and Patrick A. Ott. They, in turn, sold it in 1992 to
Amy B. Sherman. She sold it in 1998 to Anne E. Geib. In 2017, she sold it to Steven and Melinda
Altermatt, who are the current owners of record.
Public records of the work that owners have had done on the house can be found on the City
website here: Lafarge 1021- Laserfiche WebLink (louisvilleco.gov) .
Recent Architectural Analysis
According to the 2018 report "Stories in Places: Putting Louisville's Residential Development in
Context" (Microsoft Word - Final Louisville Residential Context 111918 (louisvilleco.gov))
written by PaleoWest Archaeology for the City of Louisville, "A distinctive type of house present
in Barclay Place is a Pyramidal/Hipped-roof cottage with a small gabled -front projection on the
side (Figure 140). Four are located on the same block at 1013, 1021, 1029, and 1040 La Farge
Avenue" (p. 134).
The Residential Context Report featured this photo of 1021 La Farge and its two "sister" homes
on its cover:
&alummPinca
Piemi I plitHEIC.I.RaterD'-'1— L .
tlm1derC _) L'dmala
6
