Recreation Advisory Board <br />Minutes <br />June 26, 2023 <br />Page 2 of 4 <br />Kayla Betzold, the Sustainability Manager for the City of Louisville, reported that <br />the City sent out an RFP for a sustainability study and chose McKinstry. <br />McKinstry employees were charged with examining the building, facilities, fleet, <br />and equipment to provide a strategic roadmap for sustainability. They are <br />presenting information to relevant boards and commissions, and will present the <br />information to City Council in August. At that time, the RAB may choose to <br />submit a memo with any comments and recommendations. <br />Brian Goldcrump and Ashley Brasovan from McKinstry presented information <br />about the energy usage at the Rec Center and the Coal Creek Golf Course <br />clubhouse, looking at annual energy per square foot (EUI). The rec center uses a <br />lot of energy, which is common for rec centers with pools. The clubhouse also <br />has a high EUI, caused partly by the kitchen equipment. <br />Brian presented the Internal Decarbonization Plan, which includes the following <br />recommendations: <br />• replacement of current equipment with electric alternatives when the <br />equipment is due for replacement, <br />• checking and updating the controls in the buildings, <br />• adding solar arrays in both locations, <br />• adding electric chargers for cars, <br />• installation of a heat pump HVAC system at the clubhouse, <br />• electrification of cooking equipment in the clubhouse kitchen, and <br />• continuing to purchase electric equipment for golf course maintenance. <br />The consultants advocated replacing equipment at the end of its useful life. For <br />the rec center, much equipment would be scheduled for replacement in 2034- <br />2036. A hybrid system at the rec center is more cost-effective than an entirely <br />electric system, because the high load on cold winter days would result in utility <br />penalties. <br />Dick Friedson asked if the consultants were aware that another consulting team <br />hired by the City had concluded that the clubhouse is inefficient, inadequate, and <br />needs to be replaced. Sustainability retrofits in the current facility would be a <br />waste of money, if a new net -zero building could be built. <br />Grant funding is available to offset the cost of many of the sustainability <br />recommendations. Kayla has already applied or is in the middle of applying for <br />some of these. A grant from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) can provide a 25%- <br />30% reduction in cost. RAB members would like to know which grants would be <br />applicable and available for building a net -zero clubhouse and who would be <br />available to write the grants. Ashley suggested contacting the Colorado Energy <br />Office and advocated acting soon, while the IRA is in effect. <br />
