rows of projecting stretchers at the level of the first floor windows sills (bottom) and then
two rows of project stretchers separate by a course of saw tooth patterned bricks at the
first floor window lintels (top). Window patterns are predominantly 3-over-1 double -hung
sash (ribbon style), stone sills and segmental brick arched headers.
The primary structure exhibits a cross gabled roof with an additional projecting front -
facing gable on the front elevation. A shed roof addition on the north (rear) of the
property appears to be more than 50 years old. There is a red brick chimney located on
the exterior of the south elevation.
Previous State Architectural Inventory Forms have noted that the house is historically
significant relative to two National Register criterion including National Register Criterion
A, for its association with residential development in Louisville during the first half of the
twentieth century. That form also notes that the house is architecturally significant under
National Register Criterion C, as a rare brick residence is Louisville. While there have
been some additions and changes over time, the house retains a high level of historic
integrity.
In 2008, the City of Louisville presented current owner Gary Dunlap with a Historic
Preservation Merit Award for his historically sensitive addition, which consisted of
raising the roof to create additional space. The Historic Structure Assessment (HSA),
completed in 2023, describes this change as follows on page 14:
Second story expansion, 2000, harmonious with existing structure. The
upper -floor ceiling height was elevated about 18 inches, the east -west
ridge was raised, and walls and doors were added to define the second -
story rooms. Downstairs the ceiling height was restored to 9 feet. Plaster
over brick interior wall removed in living room. Stud wall with insulation
framed inside lower -level exterior walls. These walls are reversible if
exposing original walls is desired in the future. Back door of sliding glass
replaced by 10-light wood door and side windows. Includes plumbing,
structural support for upper level of main house, electrical.
0
