Recommendations

Based on my review of the documents available plus the meeting with arts group
representatives and other discussions, I humbly recommend the following steps.
The recommendations are listed in priority order and are offered for consideration
by LCC and the City.

The representatives at this meeting are heavily committed to their own
organizations and purposes, of course. All commit tremendous talent and time to
develop arts opportunities in Louisville and naturally advocate for and defend
their own organizations' purposes and projects. At the same time, it seems clear
to me that all are able to see the larger picture and willing to work with others to
nurture breadth in arts opportunities in Louisville.

I would hope that these recommendations encourage the Louisville Cultural
Council to continue the conversation. I also hope to encourage City staff to re-
visit their processes as well, particularly to engage with arts group
representatives to maximize the impact of this wonderful, but limited facility now
serving as the Louisville Center for the Arts:

1) Re-institute full-year schedule planning for the Art Center. Both of the
following steps are essential:
a) Solicit schedule requests from CCCT, CSTC, LAA, LCC, and others in the
summer for the full year.
b) Re-institute the formerly held September meeting of group representatives
to discuss and work through schedule conflicts and concerns.
i) City staff should chedule a September meeting and perhaps also an
October meeting so that staff and scheduling groups can work through
both specific schedule conflicts and broader issues like responsibility
for building clutter and cleanliness, priorities, and prospects.
2) Prior to the next schedule review session, City staff should analyze the past
three to five years of Art Center usage and share that information through
LCC to better indicate trends in use by specific groups and for specific
purposes. This sort of analysis has the potential to inform:
a) Discussions of schedule conflicts.
b) Planning for the broad range of arts and cultural programming.
c) Need assessment as the City, arts groups, and others consider the
potential of new facilities.

Closing

I am grateful to LCC for the opportunity to have these conversations, study the
documents, and offer recommendations for their consideration. I accept full
responsibility for any errors of omission or fact in this report. I hope and trust that
any errors would be corrected in on-going conversations among the groups as
they collaborate with each other, LCC, and the City.

August 11, 2009

Art Center Usage Report

Page 5 of6
