Youth Advisory Board
Meeting Minutes
9/18/09

. Mandy- communications policy and open government rules. It is OK to
speak one on one about Y AB business, but if it is three or more, then it
is considered a meeting and there has to be an agenda. For all emails
to be sent to the group at large, please send to Mandy for distribution
first.
. AII- discussed what we hope to get out of the Y AB this year, why they
joined.

VIII. Expectations of Board Members and Professional Conduct
. Mandy- Y AB members represent the city of Louisville and should act
accordingly- be good role models.

IX. Guest Speaker- Julie Watson Smith, Youth Leadership Mentor
. Goals: a recent survey asked 1000 adults (28-60 yrs old) how many
had been taught to set a goal- only 36 (3.6%) said yes.
. Julie's definition of a goal = an experience she wants to have or a
change she wants to make.
. Don't forget to celebrate the things you do complete- each step down
the road is a "win" and measurable progress.
. Develop more of a proactive spirit, rather than reactive. Plan ahead,
be prepared.
. Set deadlines! This is your target for measurement.
. We are all born leaders, we just need to build our skills to do so
through character, service and gratitude.
. Six keys of character: Responsibility, Integrity, Respect, Perseverance,
Teamwork, Kindness.
. Service: It IS a great thing to be a go-getter, but it is also important to
be a oo-oiver. Give a hand, your time or even a compliment and
respect, no strings attached.
. Gratitude: It is OK to want things, but important to be grateful for what
you already do have- being grateful brings you back into the present.
. *Suggestion- try to incorporate a gratitude/celebration moment into
each day, or each meeting. How did you serve someone today, and
vice versa.

X. Discussion of Goals for Upcoming Year including volunteer projects
Brainstorming: Volunteer Activities:
October:
Halloween activity at the YTMCA (Monday before Halloween)
Flu Prevention- clean books (library), toys (Rec. Center)
Can we try to do both this month?
November:
Community Food Share
Bake cookies for the elderly (label for allergies)- move this to January
