Open Space Advisory Board
Minutes
January 13, 2010
Alternative Energy Generation on Open Space
David has a business based in Louisville that installs solar electric
systems. David suggested that his presentation to the Board is not a conflict of
interest because there is no selling occurring. David proceeded to speak to the
idea that the City of Louisville needs to begin planning in earnest for local energy
independence and that the "open space resource" could begin to support itself,
especially on "orphan" open space parcels. He suggested that it is possible that
the future power-generating open space resources in the City could help finance
the retention, maintenance, and restoration of all open space in the City,
therefore achieving acost-neutral, self-supporting model to ensure our open
space legacy.
There was discussion about whether power generation on open space is
legal and whether the Board is interested in discussing this topic.
Tom suggested that a subcommittee be convened to discuss the topic
further.
Doug Grinbergs showed a website from New Jersey and another from
Sierra Club indicating that other entities are considering energy production on
open lands in other states.
David indicated that acity-wide referendum would be needed to create a
new open space category that could possibly support power generation.
David agreed to head the subcommittee and asked Board members to
contact him if interested in attending.
Discussion Items for Next Meeting
-Conoco-Phillips plans and issues
-Open Space Vision & Mission Statements
Adjourn -Truman motioned to adjourn, Linda seconded.
