COUNCIL COMMUNICATION <br />TO: MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL <br />FROM: MALCOLM FLEMING, CITY MANAGER <br />DATE: APRIL 6, 2010 <br />SUBJECT: AWARD BID TO LAFARGE WEST FOR THE RECREATION CENTER <br />RESURFACING PROJECT <br />ORIGINATING DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT <br />SUMMARY: <br />On March 25, 2010 bids were received for the Recreation Center Resurfacing Project. Staff <br />requested contractors provide a base bid with alternate asphalt milling proposals (partial mill <br />and full mill). The low bid was 70% of the Engineer’s estimate.Considering the bids, staff is <br />recommending award with the partial pavement mill alternative. Base bid with partial pavement <br />mill prices are as follows: <br /> Lafarge West $109,919.70 Quality Paving $138,702.25 <br /> Asphalt Specialties $118,380.65 Brannan Sand & Gravel $138,960.00 <br /> Premier Paving. $122,565.60 Asphalt Paving Co. $166,496.40 <br /> Aggregate Ind. $134,423.65 <br />The project includes concrete replacement, patching, leveling, pavement fabric, overlay and <br />pavement marking. The work included in this project is depicted within the bid documents and <br />is available upon request. <br />Construction activities are scheduled to commence on April 19 and be substantially complete <br />by May 18. Approximately half of the main parking lot will be available for parking at all times <br />during the work. Overflow parking will be directed to the Skate Park parking lot. <br />FISCAL IMPACT: <br />Funding is available from the Capital Projects Fund, Recreation Center Parking Lot Repaving <br />($175,000). <br />Public Works staff is requesting additional funding in the amount of $5,000 for engineering, <br />material testing and other miscellaneous soft costs. Staff is also requesting $34,000 for 5% <br />project contingency to address unknown site conditions, additional concrete replacement to <br />correct minor lot drainage and accessibility issues, additional asphalt work to improve site <br />paving and possibly enhance the main access crosswalk by using inlaid thermoplastic. <br />The total projected cost is $148,919.70 ($109,919.70 + $5000 + $34,000). <br />SUBJECT AGENDA ITEM <br />AWARD BID FOR THE RECREATION <br />4D <br />CENTER RESURFACING PROJECT <br />íè <br /> <br />
