4 ! <br /> 4/3/84 Page -2- <br /> Councilman Cussen Requested of Ms. Nicholas if she would sum- <br /> marize the research or the findings she has <br /> done relative to the issue. <br /> Need for Crossing Guards Ms. Nicholas stated that she had spokes with <br /> people is the cities of Lafayette, Longmont <br /> and Boulder and in all 3 cities the City does <br /> employ and train their crossing guards. <br /> In Longmont the School District shares • <br /> cost of these salaries, which is usually <br /> a minimum wage and a few hours per day. <br /> She also had a brochure that she would make <br /> available to any of the coucilmembers that <br /> outlines which section to go through to deter.- <br /> mine which intersections cn s need crossing guards, <br /> or signals, etc. Commented that Attorney <br /> Rautenstraus possibly had this information <br /> also. Ms. Nicholas felt that there were <br /> several places in the City where this need <br /> existed. The survey had not been completed. <br /> Parent Volunteers. Councilman CusY3 asdinel when the survey was <br /> dons did she check into those <br /> where the Department of Public Safety trained <br /> parent volunteers, and the effectivemese of <br /> those programs? <br /> She replied that they didn't get into this <br /> aspect. <br /> Mr. Cussen advised that Arvada was a prime <br /> example of a City that does an outstanding <br /> job in that area. <br /> She understood that Jefferson County had a <br /> good program also. Ms. Nicholas stated that <br /> in talking with crossing guards not only do <br /> they help with traffic problems but with <br /> children who are ill , or lost, and to keep <br /> an eye out for suspicious people loitering <br /> around school areas or routes that children <br /> walk home by. The guards feel that it is <br /> a very rewarding job because they feel that <br /> are needed. It was her understanding that <br /> either young parents or senior citizens are <br /> possibly the best candidates for this duty. <br /> She advised that in the City of Lafayette, <br /> the Police Dept. pays for the crossing guards. <br /> She felt that the funding for crossing guards <br /> in the other two cities was either from <br /> the Engineering or Planning Departments. <br /> Councilwoman Morris Commented the discussion of the crossing <br /> guards came up just before school started <br /> this year and the 4-way stop had helped <br />
