MrM
Merck 26. 1987
Hers Tawom
749 Main Street
Louisville, CO 80027
Dear Mayor ?scare:
The National Organisation for Victim Assistance bas declared the week of April
26 through May 2, 1987 as National Victim Nights Week. The purpose of this
week, observed by some 45 states last year is to acknowledge the drrsatatioe
that crime has created across our nation and to underscore our dsterninmtion
to assist its casualties.
Tbs growth of the victims movwnat in the United States has bean
extraordinary. In little over a decade, countless victims and their advocates
have helped enact over 1,000 pieces of victirorieuted legislation in the
states, and helped establish lose 5,000 victim service programs nationwide.
And w have seen great examples of these national trends hers in Colorado and
Boulder County.
But we who feel closest to that progress are the first to acknowledge that
*anions of victims still go unserved or uoders•rved. Some are overlooked
because of race, lifestyle, or creed. Others because they are poor, or live
far from neighbors and public services, or are kept isolated end bidden io a
hose of violence. Still others because they are not considered "victims",
like the surviving loved owes of homicide victims, or the survivors of drunk
driving crashes, or children too young to speak.
Is who work with victims and witnesses in Boulder County believe that all
victims altars a common bond is the distress they have experienced and in their
struggle to fairly describe themselves as "survivors". We also believe that,
to aid in their recovery fros the injustices done to them, all victims are
entitled to certain basic rights and decencies. We are confident that you too
hold this belief.
We therefore respectfully request that you support National Victim Rights Weak
and urge the citisens of Louisville to join in that support by issuing a
commemorative proclamation. A suggested draft is enclosed for your
consideration.
Sincerely.
but Edwards
Victim/Witness Assistance
Boulder County District Attorney's Office
sot IOlt C01.14TY IUATFC.CENSER•/0 OCK 471•11OULDIR COLORADO OW%a IsOA Kt-%'ID
101•CMONr 011KI•3•S FOURTH Awl hl 1•SUITE 7 IONC,MO!(T.COLORADO WW1•(IOI!772-0111 I)OI}441.172S
