Historical Commission
Minutes
March 17, 2010

is an important priority, along with office and work space. Bridget Bacon reminded the
Commission that in 2004, the Louisville Museum was given a grant to have an
assessment of the Museum from experts in the field and that they recommended in
their Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) Report that the City of Louisville
construct an additional building primarily to address the severe storage issues of the
Museum. The recommendation was for a new museum building that could go on
City-owned property between the Jacoe Store and Tomeo House, replicating a period
fac;ade from the two story building that was located there during the first half of the
1900s. Such a building would be expected to cost just over $200,000 (based on
estimates that were made a few years ago) and could provide much needed storage
space, office space for staff and volunteers, an ADA compliant restroom, janitorial
space for cleaning supplies, and a staging area for school tours. The Department of
Local Affairs and the Louisville Historic Preservation Tax were both mentioned as
part of the discussion about costs.

The discussion turned to the June study session with the Louisville City Council and
what needs at the Museum the Commission might want to discuss with City Council.
Diane Marino noted that a continuing issue is the lack of staffing for the Museum,
even if the storage needs are met. Some Commission members indicated that they
would like the Commission to advocate for a new building to be built in the empty
space on the Museum's campus. Dan Mellish noted that it is certainly a long term
goal to erect a building to take care of the City's historical collection.

For the short term, it was noted that there are several approaches to easing the
space issue temporarily that the City could look into, including:
a. building temporary shelves in the Jordinelli house,
b. renting climate-controlled space in a Main Street building, or
c. locating other climate-controlled space

Bridget Bacon said that she will try to find out about how much weight can safely be
put on the floors of the Jordinelli House.

XII. Chairperson's Report: There were no additions.

XIII. Commission Comments. Brian Chamberlin reported that he spoke to the
Newcomers Club about Louisville history. He was thanked for his participation. Diane
Marino asked if there would be another meeting with historical organizations in
Lafayette and Superior as there were a few years ago. Bridget Bacon said that she
would check on which community might be able to host a meeting again.

XIV. Discussion Items for April 21 Meeting. No decision was made about participating
in the Fall Festival, possibly with a float, and it was decided that this can be decided
at a later meeting.

XV. Adjourn.

City of Louisville
Louisville Historical Museum 749 Main Street Louisville CO 80027
303-665-9048 (phone) 303-335-4550 (fax) www.louisvilleco.gov
