Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
April 19, 2010

Koertje stated this is a prominent corner and is happy it is proposed to retain
character.
Stewart thinks it is a great re-use of the building. He reminded them to follow the
design handbook.
Koertje then asked about underground storage tanks.
Sholders answered they were removed in 1999.
Williams asked if they had any proposed colors.
Sholders answered they have not gotten that far yet. White might be the
predominant color.
Empire Windows
Sholders presented his request to remove the windows on the Empire for folding
(open) windows. The proposal also recommends removing the kick plate under
the southern window so that it can be a walk through opening.
Williams asked if there was any way to keep the kick plate.
Sholders stated they would like it open to draw more attention.
Lewis stated she is not a huge fan of this request, primarily because of the
removal of the kick plate from the 1950’s facade.
Koertje agreed stating the applicant should retain the historical kick plates.
Sholders stated he did a similar project in Larimer Square and it has been very
successful. He then asked what he would need to do to proceed.
Stewart stated if he retained the historical openings he would be fine with this
project proceeding.
Lewis reminded McCartney to check the 50% rule (demolition) and she
nominated Stewart for design assistance.
McCartney and Stewart agreed.
Update/Discussion/Action – Architectural Survey, update re: application
Staff gave an update on the SHF grant application.
Committee Reports
Community Outreach –
HPC discussed the efforts being taken on community outreach for the upcoming
th
landmark workshop being held in May (May 8). Examples included hand
delivering of printed flyers to each house in Old Town.
