Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
October 19, 2009

who played a major role in the founding of Louisville as well as the opening of its
first coal mine, the Welch Mine.
McCartney continued with the social history, a copy of which is included in the
staff report.
McCartney stated the HPC review subcommittee reviewed the property and
noted the structure was located in its original location and appeared to have most
of the original architectural elements. There was evidence the existing windows
had been removed because you could see the patch marks in the siding. This
was an indication that the siding was original. The replacement windows were
stated to have a similar design to the original windows – however the newer
windows were not as high as the original windows.
McCartney stated there had been an addition to the rear of the house after 1953,
but the addition did not appear to affect the façade of the original structure.
Koertje asked for the applicant’s presentation.
Brian Gary, the representative for the property owners, gave a presentation
regarding the structure. Gary stated they did not intend to demolish everything
on the property. They would like to maintain the front of the structure, and place
the addition to the rear.
Commission Questions:
Lewis asked Gary how much of the original structure does he plan to keep.
Gary responded they will retain the front of the building, but not sure how much.
Stewart asked Gary if the roof would be removed.
Gary answered in the affirmative.
Koertje asked if the future structure would be a single story or would it be two
story.
Gary stated it would be a two story structure.
Gary stated they would more than likely place a plaque on the structure which
explained the history of the structure.
Public Comment
No one from the public spoke regarding this structure.
Commission Comments:
Stewart asked the other Commission if they thought the social history was
significant.
Koertje stated he did not believe the social history was that significant.
Lewis stated she is mainly interested in maintaining the front portion of the house
and believed they could restore the original openings of the windows. She
believed a stay would be best so that the Commission could provide design
assistance.
