LIBRARY & MUSEUM NEWS LIBRARY & MUSEUM JOIN FORCES M any communities combine their libraries and museums into one department, since both acquire, preserve, and make their collec- tions available to the public. Well, now Louisville has done the same thing. At the beginning of 2010, the Historical Museum became part of the Library Services department, which is now called the Department of Library and Museum Services. Beth Bar- rett, selected as the new Library Director in September, 2009, heads the combined department. Bridget Bacon, a long -time Louisville resident, historian, and Library advocate, retains her vital role as Museum Coordinator. Already, the two organizations are collaborating on several projects: • Public programs on topics of local history to take place at the Library in 2010; • Museum and Library staff will add Museum reference books to the Library's catalog; • Library staff cross- trained to help patrons find Louisville history information at both facilities; • Exhibits of Museum artifacts and photos at the Library; • More Louisville history information and images made available online; On four upcoming Saturdays, historical walking tours of Louisville will be conducted by Anne Robinson of the Louis- ville Historical Commission. The tour dates are July 3 & 31, September 4, and October 2. Tours will begin at 10:30 AM on the front steps of the Library. In October and November, the Library art gallery display cases will feature an exhibit on "Who Do We Think We Are ?" that's inspired by the popular NBC genealogy series, "Who Do You Think You Are ?" The exhibit will feature some of the Louisville Historical Museum's photo images and artifacts of early families of Louisville. �i VOLUNTEERS NEEDED .. . ... for the Adult Computer Tutor pro- gram. HAVE IT TODAY (HIT) DVDs N ew DVD releases and other new DVDs are now available on a first -come, first - served basis...right in the Lobby! A HIT DVD can be checked out for one week, but it can't be placed on hold, and it can't be renewed —mak- ing new titles available to more customers more quickly! The HIT DVDs are on display on a kiosk in the Lobby, so patrons can just pop in, make a selection, and even use one of three self -check stations to checkout the DVD. First -time borrow- ers will also be required to complete a laptop use agreement. If you are 17 or older, you may borrow a laptop to use in the Library for up to 3 hours, using the Library's wireless net- work. Laptops are available at either the Adult or Children's information desk. MORE NEW PERIODICALS FOR 2010 Wizard. The Comics Magazine, formerly a superhero fanzine, now features monthly coverage of books, movies, DVDs, gaming, and collectible toys. Our first issue has arrived in the Teen Loft, and it includes a look at the new movie, Night- mare on Elm Street, and also a look behind - the- scenes at the new A -team movie. Colorado Review, published quarterly by the Center for Literary Publishing at Colorado State University, provides fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and book reviews by new writers.
