City of Louisville
August 8, 2005
ITEM:
APPLICANT:
OWNER:
Historic Preservation Commission
Staff Report
PROJECT INFORMATION:
PROPERTY NAME:
ADDRESS:
LEGAL DESCRIPTION:
DATE OF CONSTRUCTION:
Case #05-001-LA
City of Louisville
City of Louisville
Louisville Historical Museum
1001 Main Street
Lots 1-4, Block 1, Barclay Place
Jacoe Store, 1908
Tomeo House, 1908
Jordinelli House, 1904
REQUEST: Request to landmark
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Jacoe Store — This building originally served as a retail establishment and by 1928 it
was known as the Jacoe Market. Records indicate it remained in use as the Jacoe
Market into the 1950s when it was purchased by Dominic Tomeo.
Tomeo House — Built by the Tomeo Family in the early 1900s, this house was used as
a miner's cottage for approximately 75 years. The Tomeo family lived in the house for
the majority of that time and later rented the cottage to the Ross Family.
Jordinelli House & Summer Kitchen: This house was originally built in 1904 at 1100
Lafarge Avenue and was moved to this site, with the summer kitchen, in 2001. This
home was owned by the Jordinelli Family for most of its history. Frank Jordinelli worked
in the mines in town and later passed the house on to his daughter Minnie Jordinelli
DeRose whose family sold the house in 1998. In 2001, the owners donated the house
to the City of Louisville and it was relocated.
The City of Louisville purchased the property in the 1980s and the Louisville Historical
Commission has used the site as the Louisville Historical Museum since that time.
1
