COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
TO: MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: MALCOLM FLEMING, CITY MANAGER
DATE: SEPTEMBER 28, 2010
SUBJECT: PRESENTATION – RTD QUEUE JUMPS AND TABLE MESA
IMPROVEMENTS
ORIGINATING DEPARTMENT: CITY MANAGER’S OFFICE
SUMMARY:
John Shonesy, Senior Manager of Engineering/Chief Engineer with RTD will be
attending the September 28, 2010 study session to present an update on future queue jumps
at US 36 and McCaslin and the Table Mesa project. Queue jumps typically consist of an
additional travel lane for high occupancy vehicles (HOV) and a signal allowing vehicles in the
HOV lane to proceed through the intersection prior to other traffic. Queue jumps are being built
at four intersections along the corridor – McCaslin, 96th Street, Church Ranch and Sheridan –
as part of the FasTracks U.S. 36 BRT project. In 2009, RTD received $7.5 million from the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) which is funding these queue jumps. Like
the Table Mesa project (below), the queue jumps are in final design and are anticipated to be
bid later this year. Construction will then begin in the first quarter of 2011.
The Table Mesa slip ramp and pedestrian bridge project is being funded by $3.5 million of SB-1
funding and $3.5 million from RTD. This is separate from the FasTracks-funded Bus Rapid
Transit (BRT) project. The improvements at Table Mesa will help the travel time for bus
commuters along the corridor, similar to what was built at the US 36 & Broomfield Park-n-Ride
earlier this year. The bus slip ramps will allow buses to move easily on and off the highway at
Table Mesa. Currently, this project will be bid in the fourth quarter of this year with construction
anticipated to begin in November 2010. It will take approximately two years to build the project.
A power point presentation is also provided with your agenda materials for a further overview.
ATTACHMENT(S):
RTD Power Point Presentation
SUBJECT AGENDA ITEM
PRESENTATION – RTD QUEUE JUMPS
II
AND TABLE MESA IMPROVEMENTS
2
