Gigi Yang
Louisville Historical Museum
Department of Cultural Services
City of Louisville, Colorado
April 2024
Citytf
Louisville
COLORADO • SINCE 1878
1234 Jefferson Ave. History
Legal Description: LOTS 45-46 BLK 2 NICOLAS DIGIACOMO
Year of Construction: c.1910
Summary: The history of 1234 Jefferson characterizes the early role of Italian immigrants in the
development of Louisville through the DiGiacamo and Rotolo families from 1907-1920. It also highlights
the presence of Hispanic families in Louisville from the 1920s through the 1960s including property
ownership by the Lerma Family (1926-1957) and Maestas families (1963-2023).
Development of the Nicola DiGiacomo Subdivision
This area of Louisville is called the Nicola DiGiacomo Addition, having been platted by Nicola DiGiacomo
in 1907. Nicola DiGiacomo owned and farmed this area before filing the plat for a subdivision. This
addition consists of 4 % blocks that stretch across the north end of Old Town Louisville. On the 1909
Drumm's Wall Map of Louisville, Nicola DiGiacomo is also shown as the owner of the additional property
where Louisville Middle School is now located, and the residential area that now extends behind the
school and north of it up to South Boulder Road.
DiGiacomo was born in Italy in about 1852 and immigrated to the US in about 1882. In the 1910 census,
Nicola DiGiacomo was listed as a 57-year-old farmer. Nicola DiGiacomo's wife, Lucia, was also born in
Italy in about 1852 and she immigrated in about 1888. Nicola DiGiacomo passed away in 1915.
Domenico Rotolo and Antoinette DiGiacomo James Ownership, 1908-1914
In 1908 Nicola DiGiacomo sold lots 31-48 in block 2, lots 55-72 in block 3 and lots 73-90 in block 4 of the
Nicola DiGiacomo subdivision to Domenico Rotolo for $1,000.
Domenico Rotolo (1873-1938) was born in Vastogivardi, Italy and immigrated to the U.S. around 1890.
He is listed in a Boulder County directory as living in Louisville in 1896 and working as a coal miner. He
married Antoinette (Annetta) DiGiacomo James (1881-1971) in 1899. Annetta was born in Italy and
4]
