Leh said the technology has been proven in other cities with more challenging climates.
"What's more, it is cost -competitive for our taxpayers," Leh said in the announcement.
"By taking this step, Louisville is `walking the walk' and helping pioneer change in the
field of environmental sustainability."
The adoption of the electric fleet, which will take place by the end of the year, will help
Louisville meet objectives in its Sustainability Action Plan. The plan — adopted by
Louisville's city council in October 2020 — focuses on seven sustainability topics
like climate, energy, transportation, agriculture, waste, water, ecological health and
local food.
Republic Services also has a goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 35% by 2030,
something the fleet electrification will help achieve.
"The City of Louisville's commitment to sustainability is something we truly applaud,"
said Richard Coupland, Republic Services vice president of municipal services, in the
release. "To be the first municipality in the country to adopt an electrified fleet
showcases their desire to find tangible solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and
combat climate change. Our partnership exemplifies how we can contribute to a more
sustainable world.'
The trucks are said to prioritize safety and they produce no tailpipe emissions. Safety
features include an enlarged windshield for improved visibility, automated braking,
lane -departure sensors and audible devices that alert drivers and pedestrians to the
presence of the quiet vehicles.
Republic Services plans to operate more than 50 EVs by the end of 2024, according to the
announcement. They will be used as research vehicles or in partnership with other
municipalities across the country.
WINTRUST
COMMERCIAL BANKING
DIFFERENT APPROACH, BETTER
Banking protlucu provided L , Wirnrucr Financial Corp. ban
