Individual Advocacy, Group Advocacy & Systems Advocacy.
The ACL serves people with IDD who face challenges with system design flaws that perpetuate
a lack of access to health care, long-term care, higher incidence of chronic health problems, poor
educational outcomes, lack of technology access, low employment rates, high poverty,
homelessness, and high incarceration rates. Many need support with communication, learning,
staying healthy, and living independently. However, the systems providing support have many
barriers to access, rarely accommodating a person's disability. This creates inequity. Many
people with IDD are also medically vulnerable. Many receive services and are disproportionately
represented in our prison & juvenile corrections systems.
ACL supports children in BVSD and SSVSD. The ACL provides individual, group and systems
advocacy. We also work with professionals and the community. Advocacy can be short term,
sporadic, or ongoing.
ACL Individual Advocacy Activities include:
• Individualized advocacy comprised of consultation, meeting attendance, individualized
planning, crisis mitigation, individualized training/coaching for people with IDD,
families, professionals
• Educate people with IDD about relevant issues and inform about local resources
ACL Group & Systems Advocacy Activities include:
• Create opportunities for people with IDD to meet other people in the community
• Act as a liaison to community opportunities
• Conduct public policy/systems advocacy
• Resource and facilitate Self -Advocates Becoming Empowered (SABE)
• Provide training and educational presentations to disability and non -disability
organizations and community connections
• Sponsor and consult with community organizations
• Participate regularly in community networking and interagency groups
• Cultivate relationships with organizations that support our mission
• Collaborate with local school districts around events and information sharing
• Facilitate parent network and self advocate groups
Expected results:
1. People with IDD are as independent as they want to be. They plan for their future and make
decisions about their lives.
2. People with IDD have access to justice when their rights are threatened.
3. People with IDD will expand and strengthen the comfort and skills needed to access, utilize,
and enjoy community resources and events.
4. Parents of children with IDD are well informed about special education and able to advocate
for their children.
5. The community will be disability -aware, welcoming, and accessible to people with IDD.
6. Families and allies of people with IDD understand and navigate systems, and create a plan for
the future that promotes independence.
7. People with IDD, their families and allies influence systems, laws and policies to improve
their quality of life.
3. Program measurements: Provide the following information for the program/activities for
which funding is requested:
• Quantitative measures: For example, describe the overall population and geographic area
targeted for service, with more specific information about the population you expect to reach in
Louisville.
Approximately 3,000 people with IDD receive services in Boulder County. Our target population
16/251
