Cityof <br />U Louisville <br />NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH 2024 <br />PROCLAMATION <br />WHEREAS, observed during the month of November, Native American Heritage Month <br />celebrates the people, cultures, achievements, contributions and sacrifices of Indigenous <br />Americans; and <br />WHEREAS, the observance began in 1976 as Native American Awareness week which <br />was expanded in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush to a month -long celebration; and <br />WHEREAS, for centuries this land was home to the Ute, Arapahoe and Cheyenne <br />Peoples and we acknowledge that Louisville has benefited from the forced removal and violence <br />done to these people; and <br />WHEREAS, we recognize the continued importance of Indigenous People as stewards of <br />the land, as well as their contributions to science, the arts, public service and more; and <br />WHEREAS, we value inclusivity, racial equality and our shared responsibility to honor <br />Native American history, traditions and cultural, and recognize the forced loss of their lands and <br />identities; and <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Louisville does hereby proclaim <br />November 2024, as Native American Heritage Month. <br />DATED this 19th day of November, 2024 <br />ATTEST: <br />ChristopM.
