916 Main Street
Hartronft Associates, pc
2.0.12 Denver Post — 1966
Historic Structure Assessment
October 10, 2023
The Denver Post also reported on the raid in its March 11, 1966 issue, stating that District
Attorney Rex Scott, assisted by seven law officers, arrested 22 men in the raid. Sixteen were
from Denver, three were from Pueblo, one was from Colorado Springs, and two were from
Louisville.
The front door of the pool hall was broken in by the raiding party to gain entrance. [Two
officers] covered the rear entrance while the other six officers led by Scott entered the
front door. Six of the 22 men arrested were found hiding in the basement of the building
.... [I]tems confiscated in the raid included 54 sets of dice, 96 sets of cards, 11 dice cups,
two round cloth -covered tables, a dice rack and poker chips. Owner of the pool hall,
John Madonna Jr. of Louisville, will be charged with running a gambling house,
possession of gambling devices, and permitting gambling on the premises....
The Louisville Times reported that Madonna was given probation for one year (The Louisville
Times August 12, 1966 — Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection). Also, due to him not
paying his earlier partners relating to a deed of trust whereby the property secured the loan, a
notice of sale was issued. (According to a later Louisville Times article, John Madonna was then
the owner of Platte Valley Roofing Company until he retired.)
Based on a review of the available newspaper articles, 916 Main was not the only known site of
gambling raids in Louisville in the 1950s and 1960s, but it appears to have been the site of by
far the most raids. It is believed to have been the only business in Louisville or Boulder County
that was reported to be the location of illegal operations by the Smaldone crime family.
Raymond & Nadine Caranci Ownership, 1967-1971
Martinelli Auto Supply Located at 916 Main
In 1967, 916 Main was acquired by Raymond and Nadine Caranci pursuant to the notice of sale
after Madonna's default on a loan secured by the property. From 1968 until at least 1970, 916
Main was the location of Marinelli Auto Supply (The Louisville Times August 22, 1968 —
Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection ). A photo of 916 Main from this time could not be
located.
