the Louisville Band. This early band was known as "Paddocks Band" and later the "Silk Hat Band".
Notable for being excellent musicians and for wearing extra tall hats, they played at the opening of
Chautauqua in Boulder as well as during Labor Day parades and Union events. By 1894, Max had met
and married Ella Wood.
Max Ferguson identified in this photo as possibly being 2nd from right (with pipe).
Ella Wood (1876-1929) was born in Missouri and moved to Colorado as a young girl with her parents
(Thomas Wood and Fanny Pool Wood) and grandparents (William and Rachel Pool) in 1886. The family
lived in Boulder where William Pool worked as a blacksmith. Ella was the eldest of four siblings (Charlie
b. 1880, William b.1883, and John b. 1885). Despite her grandparents being well-known and respected
in the community, reports in the Boulder Daily Camera report a difficult marriage between Ella's
parents. They were divorced in 1893, and it appears Fanny Wood placed her three sons (ages 8-13)
into an Industrial School for two years to keep them away from Thomas Wood. She then moved with
Ella to Louisville. A year later, in 1894, Fanny Wood remarried to a Dr. McGraw and Ella, age 17,
married Max Ferguson.
