One of the most not
bene“ cial conservation opportunities would come from the instal cient
irrigation system which would allow the ” exibility and control to place irrigation water where
it is speci“ cally required. New more ef“ cient irrigation heads with more uniform spacing
would allow the maintenance staff to more closely monitor and co
water to avoid over-watering and turf damage.
In addition, the master plan identi“ es a number of areas where
converted to low-maintenance grass species. These would include
and green, 4 tee, 5 tee, 9 tee, 14 green and 15 tee. Turfgrass
utilize shorter native and non-native grasses such as fescue, Pr
grass. The conversion of these native and low-maintenance area
reduce chemical and fertilizer inputs, reduce weekly mowing and
for ground-dwelling birds, rodents and insects.
Additional measures to improve environmental sustainability
include the installation of an irrigation weather station to
monitor and reduce water consumption, the installation of bird
houses and bat houses, the supplemental use of skylights and/
or solar panels for the maintenance and clubhouse facilities
and the use of porous paving materials at the clubhouse area.
Audubon International provides information and certi“ cation of
golf courses seeking to improve environmental stewardship.
Visit their website at www.auduboninternational.org.
H N G C A P 13 N 8, 2011
ERFORTORBYOLFOURSERCHITECTSAGEOVEMBER
