Memorandum
To: Historical Commission
From: Bridget Bacon, Museum Coordinator
Date: June 12, 2012
Re: Museum Coordinator’s Report
The Historical Museum has changed its hours for the summer. Instead of having public hours
on Tuesdays, the Museum will be open on Fridays from 3:00 to 8:00 in order to coincide with
downtown Louisville events on Fridays evenings (such as the First Friday Art Walk and the
Street Faires). The Museum will continue to be open from 10 to 3 every Wednesday and
Saturday as well.
A new front window exhibit at the Museum is a photo exhibit that shows “Louisville’s Main
Street in the 1940s.”
th
The group set up to discuss how Louisville might observe the 100 anniversary of the
shooting death of town marshal Victor Helburg in October 1915 met for the first time in May,
and three Helburg descendants attended. The informal group includes Brian Chamberlin and
Jennifer Strand from the Historical Commission, and plans to meet next in September.
nd
For the Taste of Louisville on June 2, the Museum had about 95 visitors. Pat Seader and
Virginia Caranci made pizzelles in front of the Jacoe Store to give out to people. A number of
other volunteers also helped to make it a success. The Commission received donations in the
amount of $89.00. Sales and new memberships came to $48.00.
In time for the Taste of Louisville, the Parks & Recreation Department planted flowers around
the Historical Museum sign.
The Brown Bag presentation and discussion in June was led by Pete Lindquist on the topic of
his article in the Spring 2012 Louisville Historian entitled “How Louisville Grew Up: 1880 to
1900.” In connection with his research and article, Pete used historic newspaper articles
about Louisville to create a “Louisville General Timeline 1877-1900.” He has donated copies
of this timeline to the Museum and to the Library for its reference section so that they are
accessible to the public.
Anne Robinson’s walking tour of downtown Louisville, “Main Street Stories,” will take place on
thst
Saturday, June 30 and on Saturday, September 1. (Meet at 9:30 AM at the front of the
Library; suggested donation is $5.) Diane Marino’s walking tour this year will be “Legends of
thth
La Farge” and will take place on Saturday, August 4 and Saturday, October 6. (Meet at
9:30 AM at the Historical Museum; suggested donation is $5.)
Museum Visitors Report (these statistics represent visits to the Museum itself, and not inquiries
that come in by email or phone): May visitors: 185; YTD 811.
