}
•
•
LOUISVILLE HORTICULTURE FORESTRY ADVISORY BOARD
MINUTES OF BOARD MEETING
December 6, 2000
Members Present: Howard Teague, Jerry Warren, Susan Spaulding, Betty Solek, Susan Ariniello,
David Russell, Brad Chronowski, Dave Sexton
Members Absent: Nanette Edwards and Steve Baysinger
City Liaisons Present: Brad Chronowski and Dave Sexton
Guest Present: Jean Morgan
A. General
1. Howard called the meeting to order and November minutes were approved.
2. Jean Morgan voiced concerns about the plantings at the corner of McCaslin and South
Boulder Road in a letter we reviewed. Item 1 -The removal of Russian olive trees along
the ditch. Dave said that has been done. Item 2 -The planting of Rabbit brush less than
2 feet from the pathway, it can grow to 9 feet in diameter. Brad said they were a dwarf
variety. Item 3 -East of the ditch is native prairie that is now bordered by cottonwood
and pine trees on the east and south, the shade from these trees will adversely effect the
native vegetation. These trees were planted to break up the view. Item 4- Spacing of
blue spruce and cottonwood trees do not allow for growth of such large trees. Dave
replied that these trees can remain healthy, although they will not grow ideally shaped
due to the spacing. Item 5-Prairie winecups are misplaced and planted too close
together. Brad said the containers were smaller than specified on the plan and the
contractor spaced the plants closer to compensate.
3. Review HFAB goals for 2001. Revisions approved, will be typed by Brad.
4. Arbor Day -Earth Day celebration is planned for Saturday, May 5, 2001 at Cottonwood
Park. Activities planned are a 5K fun run with support from Carrabbas, we will try to
have organizations such as the Native Plant Society, Sierra Club, National Wildlife
Federation, Nature Conservancy etc. set up booths, and tours will be organized for the
Arboretum, Xeric gardens etc. - No rain date.
5. Meadows Park is closer to completion. Sod of fescue and bluegrass laid at gateway.
Looking into fishing is fun project at pond by Cherry Street and Coal Creek farm.
6. Reviewed Bylaws by Susan and Betty. Motion to approve was passed, will be revised
and resubmitted to Brad with goals.
7. Brad requested everyone look at Arboretum sign before next meeting.
