BUSINESS RETENTION AND
DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
SUBJECT: RETAIL RECRUITMENT STRATEGY
DATE:FEBRUARY 3, 2014
PRESENTED BY: AARON DEJONG, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
SUMMARY:
The City Manager asked staff to begin formulating a strategy to activate vacant retail
spaces within the community. The conditions relating to each vacancy can vary greatly,
but enticing retailers, either national chains or local shop owners, to analyze Louisvilleā€™s
viability for their business. I would like assistance from the BRaD Committee to
evaluate the methods and review the work products produced.
DISCUSSION:
Many topics were discussed by the BRaD committee at the January 6, 2014 meeting.
The list of topics I presented was;
Retail Marketing Brochure
Shop Local Campaign
Retail Leakage Report
Psychographic Analysis
Lead Generation
Cold Calling
Engaging Brokers
Retail Shop Plan competition
It was discussed and agreed to hold a Retail Broker roundtable to discuss with the
broker community what resources and information they feel the City could provide to
make them more effective in landing retail tenants for their listings. The input from the
brokers will help formulate a retail strategy that best supports the broker community to
land retail tenants. I will be identifying dates in March for holding that roundtable.
It is important to have a list of questions we would like answered either before or during
the meeting. The following is a list of potential questions. I would like further input from
the group to add, delete, or modify these questions.
1) Would a community brochure be helpful in recruiting retail tenants in Louisville?
2) What information is most helpful to provide in such a brochure?
3) What negatives to you hear from prospective retailers when they are considering
Louisville?
4) Are you aware of the Business Assistance Program offered by the City to recruit
new retail tenants in town?
5) Are there barriers you see in Louisville that limits retail opportunity in town?
6
