Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
April 21, 2014
Stewart stated we can discuss that after the vote.
Motion carries 5 to 1 with La Grave voting no.
Cohen stated he is a willing party to preserve the sign.
La Grave stated he does not see where submitting a demolition permit is in any way an effort
to preserve the sign.
Watson stated a demolition permit is required for even preserving a sign.
Cohen stated that is his understanding.
Stewart stated property owners can always work with the HPC and City to explore options
other than demolition and the application triggers the 180 day stay triggering the HPC the
ability to work with the applicant and owner. He recommends the HPC appoint someone to
work with the applicant, tenant and landlord. He added the City should consider purchasing
the sign.
Watson stated he would be glad to work with the applicant and City staff because he has
studied lighting options.
Stewart stated he would want to assist as well.
Public Hearing – 740 Front Street, Grant Modification
Robinson presented the information provided in the staff report. He stated the applicant is
requesting credit for previous work completed in the past 5 years to count towards the grant
match. He added staff went through the receipts and has determined they should be eligible
for match of $14,010.99 based on the approved criteria. He stated this won’t change the
amount coming out of the HPF, it is primarily for accounting reasons.
La Grave asked if the $14,010.99 conforms within the period of “look back” as established in
the resolution.
Robinson stated it does.
Stewart asked what was the basis for staff’s decision.
Robinson gave a rundown of how he determined the costs.
Watson asked why we are giving credit to some items that could be considered maintenance
or may be destroyed during renovation.
Robinson stated he believed the repairs were necessary for the preservation of the structure at
that time.
