This would be another teal to add to the restoration efforts that are
currently occurring. This work would be contracted out to a certified National Wildfire
Coordinating Group (NWCG) fire management organization. 2016 work would include
creation of a burn plan and a small pilot project at Davidson Mesa. WiI h the success of
the pilotprojectthe program would be expanded to Open Space properties with high
grassland restoration potential_ Properties to be treated would incltrt9e sections of
Davidson Mesa, Aquarius and North Open Space_ Small portions of the properties would
be burned on a rotating bases.
Eliminating tire from the grassland ecosystem has been shown to lead to ecological
homegenizatien or a decrease in flora and fauna diversity. If lire is not reintroduced
nutrient cycling will be diminished, biodiversity will be climiniehed and dead plant
materials will continue to accumulate. The increase in dead plant material will lead to
more fuel loading which could increase the likelihood and surface intensity of a wildland
fire and decrease in noxious weed treatment effectiveness.
Please provide a description of any grants andfor other revenue associated with this
project and the ongoing operational and !maintenance costs associated with this project.:
22
