Louisville Historical Commission
Minutes
November 5, 2014
conversation with community stakeholders. Dan Mellish and Steve Domenico agreed to
be contacts between the Sustainability Board and the Louisville Historical Commission.
VII. Discussion /Direction /Action — Review and comment on language for the
interpretive sign for the Acme Mine site (Lauren Trice, Planning Department)
Lauren Trice discussed an approved development at Hutchinson and Roosevelt Streets.
The development is on the former Acme Mine site and includes the top of the mine shaft.
The development will include a small park, located at the site of the mineshaft, with an
interpretive sign for the Acme Mine.
The meeting packet for this meeting included the developers' proposed language for the
sign. Bridget also included additional proposed versions of the language for the sign in
the meeting packet along with a history of the Acme Mine that she wrote for the Planning
Department. The background for the proposed sign is photo of a coal car with Acme
Miners.
The Louisville Historical Commission requested more information about the size and
characteristics of the sign. The Commission also requested more time to consider the
proposal and to discuss it again in the January Louisville Historical Commission meeting.
Lauren also encouraged participating in the December 3 City -wide Preservation Master
Plan Meeting at 6:30 pm in Council Chambers.
VIII. Update on Needs Assessment process (Beth, Bridget, & Commission members)
A. Visits by Metcalfe Architecture & Design; public workshops; next steps.
Bridget and Beth reported that Aaron Goldblatt and Jason Manning of Metcalfe
Architecture and Design found the small scale and walkability of Louisville downtown
and the close contact with visitors to be some of the features of the Louisville
Historical Museum that should be focused on for the Museum campus planning.
They have been discussing the plan and their report with Bridget and Beth. The final
Museum Needs Assessment report will be ready before the December 16 City
Council meeting.
B. Report by Commission members on their tours of the Louisville Historical
Museum & the Golden History Center, and discussion of any other plans to
visit additional area museums:
Anne Robinson, Jonathan Ferris, and Paula Elrod visited the Golden History Center
on Sunday, September 20. Some of the things they liked about the Golden museum
were the interactive exhibits and the use of TVs to present some of the oral histories
of the area. They noted that by comparison, the Louisville Historical Museum
provides more personal contact to visitors. Paula said that she would be willing to
look into organizing a similar trip to the Longmont Museum.
IX. Report from the Director of Library & Museum Services
A. The 2015 budget passed on Monday, November 3. Important budget items
concerning the Museum include approval for a half time museum tech to start
midyear and a summer internship position.
2
