Historical Commission
Minutes
March 19, 2015
A. City Councilwoman Ashley Stolzmann suggested that the LHC make presentations
about the plans for the Museum campus and new building to other city boards and
commissions. A subcommittee met to plan for this and developed handouts and
talking points. Presentations will be made to the following groups to start with: the
Revitalization Commission, Library Board, Cultural Council, and Louisville Historic
Preservation Commission.
At a later date, presentations will be made to the Chamber of Commerce and
Downtown Business Association.
B. Update on Historic Structure Assessments: Bridget reported that there is
potentially $10,000 - $15,000 available through a noncompetitive grant from the state
to complete historic structure assessments of the Jacoe Store and Tomeo House.
Metcalfe's needs assessment report strongly recommended that the City have these
assessments done. It is anticipated that some remediation will be required. Bridget,
Beth Barrett, and Lauren Trice are working on the application.
XI. Commission Requests for Funding from the City:
A. The LHC must submit 5 -year budget requests for the 2016 -2020 Capital
Improvement Project (CIP) by April. Beth Barrett is working on this report for the LHC,
which will include the redesigned Museum campus, the proposed new building, and
the repurposing of the Jordinelli House. The proposed timeline includes (1) Historic
Structure Assessments of the Jacoe Store and Tomeo House to be done in 2015 with
remediation to follow; (2) architect's design for the campus and new building to be
done in 2017; and (3) construction beginning in 2018. The LHC members indicated
their approval of these CIP requests and the timeline.
B. Currently, the Museum is not fully connected to the City's computer network as
other City buildings are. Fiber optic cable will be installed to within a block of the
Museum. The estimated cost for the cable to be extended to the Museum is $10,000
if it can't be done this year as part of an existing project. The LHC approved this
request.
C. Operational budgets and requests will be discussed and decided at the May
meeting.
XII. Items of Common Interest with the LHPC: Paula Elrod reported the following:
A. The owners of the residence at 721 Grant Ave., which was previously a hospital and
was used for other purposes, are interested in landmarking the property.
B. The Louisville Grain Elevator site was discussed.
C. The LHPC is working on a Preservation Master Plan and Mission Statement.
D. May is Historic Preservation Month; the LHPC will finalize plans at their April
meeting.
4
