<br />Historic Preservation Commission <br />Meeting Minutes <br />December 5, 2007 <br />Page 8 of 12 <br /> <br />Don Atwood, 298 South Taft Court, noted the difficulty of renovations to old homes. He <br />asked if Urban Renewal funds could be used to provide funds for preservation projects. <br />He asked the Commission to place a stay on the demolition request. <br /> <br />Muckle asked if Bridget Bacon, museum coordinator, could summarize her findings on <br />the address in question. <br /> <br />Bridget Bacon, museum coordinator, gave a brief history of the 1936 Monarch Mine <br />explosion and Tom Stevens' role in the explosion. She noted that a recent museum <br />exhibit and lecture have drawn great community interest adding that an April re <br />drew a crowd of over 100 people. <br /> <br /> <br />Amy Hickok, 500 Grant Avenue, stated that at one time she too was .interested <br />purchasing the home at 1016 Lafarge Avenue. She stated her feelin'll' that the social <br />history was not important to the community for many years as eviden d by the fact that <br />no one has taken proper care of the property. No one took any interest til the request <br />was made for the demolition permit. She stated her opinion that demoliti stays are <br />appropriate on some homes and not on others and noted t this house is in terrible <br />condition. <br /> <br /> <br />Lewis noted that Commission members do not r <br />initial review, so they cannot comment on what <br /> <br /> <br />the interior of the home at the <br />r problems might be. <br /> <br />Rebecca Holley gave the Commission members ph <br />structure. <br /> <br />showing the current state of the <br /> <br />Lewis explained that this ho <br />have the ability to deny demolition, <br /> <br /> <br />it is possible for a person to buy a home and <br /> <br />Greg Kidd, 1237 Lafarge Avenue, a <br />not know that it cannot be demoli <br /> <br />land marked so the Commission and City do not <br />Iy to stay the demolition for 180 days. <br /> <br />Muth stated that any purchasing a home should find out prior to the purchase if it is <br />landmarked, as that is only way the City could deny demolition. That said, she noted <br />there are no homes in Lo sville that are land marked so at this time, the City cannot <br />deny the de 'tion of any building in town. <br /> <br />Lewis open <br /> <br /> <br />e discussion to Commission comments and questions. <br /> <br />Lewis asked the pplicant to consider the new program that offers additional square <br />footage and floor area ratio if additions are placed on the rear of the home and the <br />fayade is maintained. <br /> <br />Tofte asked if this home is similar to the home in the 900 block of Lafarge Avenue that <br />has a large rear addition. No one was able to answer this with any specificity having not <br />seen the interior of that home. <br /> <br />Rebecca Holley noted that she and her husband would be more than happy to place a <br />plaque on the site commemorating the life and death of Tom Stevens and giving <br />historical information. <br />
