City Council Legal Review Committee May 4, 2016 Page 2 of 2 Light noted the appointment will be for the remaining time in Judge Joss' term, not a full two-year term. He added that whatever process the Committee decides upon to fill the position, it will need to be approved by the City Council. Lipton asked if it is appropriate to take applications or nominations. Leh stated in this field applications are generally how it is done. Members agreed on taking applications. Loo stated she would like a new judge that will continue the positive atmosphere and tone Judge Joss has created in the Court. Lipton added he wanted to continue the existing programs in the court and that the Court continue an atmosphere where everyone is treated with respect. Leh suggested the application include some questions to get to know the applicants better. Members agreed. Leh will write some and give them to staff. Light asked if the Committee wanted to list minimum qualifications in the RFP. Members decided on asking for some direct litigation experience or experience as a City Attorney. Muth stated staff would schedule an item for the May 17 meeting for the City Council to consider/approve a process for the Legal Review Committee to screen the applications and make a recommendation to the City Council on which applicant to appoint. LAWSUIT SETTLEMENTS/LITIGATION UPDATES Light gave a brief update. NEXT MEETING DATE AND POTENTIAL DISCUSSION ITEMS The next meeting was scheduled for June 9, but Leh asked if it could be moved as he can't make that date. Muth will look for a new date. Muth stated the only item on the agenda for the next meeting is the draft 501 c3 policy. Lipton asked if the Committee could look at expanding the list of prosecutors used by the Local Licensing Authority at a future meeting. ADJOURN The meeting adjourned at 9:35 AM.
