Statement of Significance This building is historically significant, relative to National Register Criterion A, for its associations with the Damato family, and commercial growth in Louisville during the first half of the twentieth century. Joe's Fruit Store (still in business as Joe's Italian market) is Louisville's last remaining example of an independently -owned small-scale market. The property is also historically significant for its representation of Louisville's ethnic Italian heritage. The building is architecturally significant as a representative wood -frame false front commercial building. For these reasons, this property is eligible for individual listing in the National Register of Historic Places. It is also eligible for National Register eligibility as a contributing property within a potential downtown Louisville Historic District. 43. Assessment of historic physical integrity related to significance: This building's integrity has been impacted by alterations to the facade, however these changes may be viewed as part of the building's history as it has evolved as a business during the last half of the twentieth century. An addition to the rear (east) elevation probably dates to the 1960s. It is architecturally compatible with the original structure.
