Construction history (include description and dates of major additions, alterations, or demolitions):
Initial construction was completed in 1956. In 1975 the house was remodeled to bring it up to current codes as
part of a Louisville Urban Renewal Authority program. The 1956 assessor's card identifies the exterior wall
material as wood siding, and the associated photo shows some dark brick on the front facade. In 1978 a
building permit was issued to brick the outside of the structure, at which time the current light-colored brick was
installed. The current white aluminum windows appear to be replacement windows installed within the original
openings.
30. Original location X Moved Date of move(s):
V. Historical background:
This building is part of Jefferson Place, the first residential subdivision in Louisville.
The history of 711 Walnut is closely tied to that of 709 Walnut (5BL11324), which is the next parcel to the west.
In 1893 and 1894, Charles Welch, the developer of Jefferson Place, sold the lots on which 709 and 711 Walnut
are situated to Mike Longgeger, a coal miner from Austria. In 1903, Longgeger sold the lots to a widow,
Lodovica Fornengo Obele. Also in 1903, Lodovica married John Vercellono, a coal miner. Both had been born
in Italy. The house at 709 Walnut was constructed in the early 1900s.
In 1938, Dominic and Lillian Buffo purchased these lots from the daughter of Lodovica Vercellono, Catherine
Cito. Dominic and Lillian made their home at 709 Walnut, which was the existing house on the property at that
time, and raised their children there. The Buffo family is an Italian family that came to Louisville in the 1890s.
Dominic Buffo was a coal miner who had grown up in Jefferson Place at 936 La Farge (5BL8002).
3
