LCityof
Louisville
Parks & Recreation
Memorandum
To: Recreation Advisory Board
From: Katie Beasley, Senior Services Supervisor
Date: 11/12/18
Subject: Age Well Plan/CASOATM Update
Purpose:
The purpose of this agenda item is to present the board with an update on the Boulder County
Age Well Strategic Plan, which is a data -driven strategic framework to encourage a more age -
friendly community by identifying strengths, challenges, and opportunities for strategic
improvements and investments.
Lindsay Parsons serves as the Aging Policy Advocate and Planner for the Boulder County Area
Agency on Aging (BCAAA). She will present Louisville data from the Community Assessment
Survey of Older Adults (CASOATM), Community Conversations information, and an update on the
strategic planning efforts of the BCAAA to the Recreation Advisory Board.
Background:
The Age Well Strategic Plan is intended to be a starting point for a collaborative, interactive,
community- driven process. The plan brings together input from older adults, community
members, service providers, organizations, and community leaders. The Age Well Strategic Plan
is developed every 4 years and includes data and information from BCAAA, local organizations,
and national organizations to better understand local needs and evidence -based solutions. The
strategic planning process is an ongoing, organic progression that engages community members
and partner agencies to recognize the growing and vital role that older adults play in making
Boulder County a wonderful place to live. Information in this plan can be used to develop action
steps for policy work, public information campaigns, and resource identification to fund
innovative pilot projects in the community. The Age Well Strategic Plan is an invitation and a
call to action for policy makers, planners, funders, service providers, faith communities,
community organizations, and community members to view aging in a new and positive way,
and to work together so that we may all age well.
The CASOATM is a statistically valid survey that determines the strengths and needs of older
adults as reported by older adults themselves in Boulder County and across Colorado. These
reports are intended to enable local governments, community -based organizations, the private
sector, and other community members to understand more thoroughly and predict more
accurately the services and resources required to serve an aging population.
Age Well Community Conversations were also conducted throughout the county, with three
hosted in Louisville. Two conversations were held at the Recreation/Senior Center. To enrich
and provide depth to the CASOATM and other concurrent research, qualitative research was
designed to gain first-hand understanding of the day-to-day experiences of older adults in
Boulder County; to identify any barriers that exist preventing ease of access to services that
older adults expect and need; and to identify priorities held by older adults for aging well.
