W LoLB'yu"' ille Memorandum
isv
Parks & Recreation
To: Parks and Public Landscaping Advisory Board (PPLAB)
From: Dean Johnson, Parks Superintendent
Date: 11/5/20
Subject: Staff Update on Project and Maintenance Activities from this Past Summer
Purpose:
The purpose of this agenda item is to update PPLAB on maintenance activities and projects from
this past summer that were largely effected by two unrelated events.
Background:
This past summer's maintenance activities and projects were dramatically affected by the
pandemic outbreak of COVID-19. Capital and operational budgets were reduced. As such,
many projects were cancelled and seasonal hiring was minimized. Core duties continued to be
emphasized with limited staff.
Beyond COVID-19, a decision was made to move forward with the elimination of the use of the
herbicides, glyphosate and 2, 4-D in parks. During the summer, staff switched to more
mechanical control and the use of organic weed controls. Details on results and tentative
approach for the continued use of non -synthetic weed control methods will be discussed during
the meeting.
Next Steps:
During the update, staff is open to discussing and receiving any recommendations PPLAB may
have on prioritization of resources for maintenance activities.
7
