The top
surface of the pedestal measures 30" x 30"
more than adequate for a sculpture base
plate.
am proposing an 8' to 10' tall steel and
ceramic pillar/totem style sculpture. The
steel work will provide both structural
support and decorative elements to the
piece. It will house richly carved ceramic
artwork on all four sides. These ceramic
carvings will be mortared and grouted to
cement backer board screwed into steel
supports. The clay body I use is a robust,
high -grog, mid -fire clay with low -moisture
absorption, which makes it very durable in
freeze/thaw cycles. The glaze or stain colors
on the ceramic surface will not fade in the
sun.
The steel surfaces will gradually gain a
beautiful rust patina similar to the steel of the
railroad bridge nearby. There should be no
ongoing maintenance to the sculpture
required.
Quick sketch showing the likely scale of the sculpture
