Louisville Public Library
Library Board of Trustees
LOUISVILLE PUBLIC
LIBRARY
GO ANYWHERE FROM HERE
Subject: Library Policies
Date: March 11, 2021
Background:
Good public spaces are fully accessible, both physically and socially, and inclusive of all visitors.
Every visitor has the right to feel safe and welcome, and to feel like they belong regardless of
their age, race, ethnicity, gender, national origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation,
socioeconomic status, education, immigration status, and self-identity.
To create a truly inclusive environment at the Library, the policies that guide our actions should
respect patrons' differences while maintaining a clean, safe and vibrant space where everyone
truly belongs.
In evaluating Library policies we will first recognize that we come from a place of privilege, and
that this significantly colors the lens through which we view the world.
For each policy we will ask:
• Do we need this policy (or a specific piece of this policy)?
• Does this policy support the culture we're trying to build?
• How does this policy impact different communities or individuals differently?
• Is this policy targeting a particular group of patrons?
• Is the language unwelcoming, offensive, objectionable or inaccessible to certain
communities?
Below you will find the Vision, Mission and Values as they relate to EDI for the City and the
Library.
Vision
The City of Louisville — dedicated to providing a vibrant, healthy community with the best small
town atmosphere.
Mission
Our commitment is to protect, preserve, and enhance the quality of life in our community.
The Louisville Public Library's mission is to inform, involve, and inspire to enhance the quality of
life in the communities that we serve.
