LCityf Louisville
PARKS, RECREATION, AND OPEN SPACE
Memorandum
To: Open Space Advisory Board
From: Ethan Abner, Cara Potter, and Jena Van Gerwen, CU Masters of the
Environment Students
Date: July 14, 2021
Re: Informational Item 8: Mayhoffer Farm Management Plan
Purpose:
Our presentation at this week's OSAB meeting is meant to introduce the background, purpose,
objectives, and timeline for our project: creating a land management plan for the Mayhoffer Farm
open space property. We have been working on this project for about 3 months and would like to get
you all on board now, in anticipation of presenting the completed land management plan to the board
this Fall (hopefully Sept.). We welcome your questions and thoughts and appreciate any input you
may have for us during this stage of the project.
Background:
Ethan Abner, Cara Potter, and Jena Van Gerwen are graduate students in the Masters of the
Environment program (MENV) at the University of Colorado, Boulder. This is a professional program
that requires students to partner with an organization to support their work on a particular project over
the course of about a year. The three were selected by Boulder County Parks and Open Space, as
well as the cities of Lafayette and Louisville to work on creating a land management plan for the
Mayhoffer Farm property.
The Mayhoffer Farm property was a high priority land acquisition for Boulder County, the City of
Louisville, and the City of Lafayette due to its potential for multiple uses: expanding agriculture, trail
connectivity and ADA accessible trails, education and interpretation, and native wildlife conservation
in this area. The property is located at the crossroads of Empire Rd. and 95t" St., adjacent to the
Harney-Lastoka open space property, a crucial part of the open space buffer between Louisville and
Lafayette. The property was acquired in 2017 and now, a thoughtful and comprehensive land
management plan is needed to ensure this potential is realized.
Next Steps:
After we present more detailed information about our project during this week's meeting, we welcome any
feedback, questions, or thoughts. We will look forward to seeing you all in September (tentatively) with a
draft land management plan for your review and additional comments!
