Open Space Advisory Board
Minutes
July 14, 2021
David observed that the City's Highway 42 Master Plan suggests trails
connectors into the Mayhoffer Farm trail network. He continued, saying that
there has been City discussion of re-routing the Coal Creek trail to follow the
creek rather than going up Aquarius hill and added that the suggestion has never
seemed to get much traction, but he wanted the team to know about it. Nathan
added that the County has not been supportive of the re -alignment of the trail
along the creek, as they are prioritizing conservation along that portion of the
land. Councilmember Deb Fahey reiterated the County had nixed aligning the
trail along the creek. She added that the Council is looking for a trail along the
eastern side of Highway 42 that could tie into the network.
Deb also suggested the Louisville History Museum as a resource to the
team to research land history. She added that she would like to see the land
managed for carbon sequestration and climate change resilience. Ethan said
that the Louisville Historical Museum has already been helpful and appreciated
the emphasis on climate.
Anneliese suggested a creek and barbed wire clean-up as part of the plan.
Jessamine commented that questions about the conservation easements
and restriction covenants have come up before the board. She suggested that
documentation about the rules of those properties might be a valuable resource
to the board.
9. Discussion Item: OSAB 2021 Goals. Presented by Jessamine Fitzpatrick,
OSAB Chair. (See page 27-36 of the July 14, 2021, OSAB Meeting packet)
Jessamine asked the lead person for each goal area to direct a high-level
discussion about OSAB's goal status in their site in order. For Trails, Jessamine
asked if it was still realistic to designate the social trails plan (2.1) for Q3. Nathan
thought projects were getting stacked up, and that timing might be hard to meet,
but he would check in with Ember. For Resource Management, the PPLAB co -
meeting goal is dependent on PPLAB. David asked whether the Davidson Mesa
planned burn was still on track (2.1). Nathan said it is unlikely to happen soon,
as the leadership of the firefighter organization had changed. For Education &
Outreach, David asked whether open space would be working booths at the
street fair now that it has started up again. Nathan said it hadn't been on staff's
radar yet, but thought the Good Dog education campaign might be a good fit for
the Street Faire. Jessamine cautioned that if the team is too busy, the board
shouldn't turn this into a burden. Several board members volunteered to work at
the booth. Councilwoman Fahey suggested looping in schools and young people
for education campaigns. In General Business, Peter indicated that he is happy
to consult with staff about the ranger program (5.1). He is particularly interested
in how to update protocols on some of the code issues. He would also be
interested in learning about the orientation materials for new staff with the idea
that it could also be helpful for onboarding the following new board members. He
would be happy to help design orientation materials for new members.
I
