SUBJECT: BEEKEEPING -THE KEEPING OF DOMESTIC HONEY BEES
DATE: MAY 12, 2009
Westminster Defined as
Livestock
Windsor '/4 ac or 25' 6' fence or Yes Adopted 2008
less = 2 vegetative
'/4 ac screen
+=4
Fort Collins '/4 ac or 25' 6' fence or Yes Adopted 1989
less = 2 vegetative
'/4 ac screen
+=4
Lafayette Rural Estate - By SRU
Ind.
Common Definitions:
Apiary shall mean a place where bee colonies are kept.
Bee shall mean any stage of the common domestic honey bee, apis mellifera species.
Colony shall mean a hive and its equipment and appurtenances,
Hive shall mean a structure intended for the housing of a bee colony.
Fiscal Impact:
Fiscal impact on service sector departments of adopting beekeeping in the municipal code will
be dependent on the extent of regulation and enforcement required. In review of more recently
adopted codes from Denver, Windsor, and Fort Collins the fiscal impact would be minimized as
the use is allowed subject to limitations of lot size, setbacks, and fencing enclosures.
Conversely, where a public hearing is required prior to conducting the activity the fiscal impact
would be higher.
Recommendation:
Conduct discussion of the issue and set as a discussion and direction item for the June 2, 2009
Council agenda.
Attachments:
1.
