TO: BUSINESS RETENTION & DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE FROM: MALCOLM FLEMING CITY MANAGER DATE: JANUARY 6, 2009 SUBJECT: 2008 BUSINESS RETENTION SUMMARY ORIGINATING DEPARTMENT: CITY MANAGER'.'S OFFICE SUMMARY: The Business Retention and Development (BRaD) cornmittee, and members of City Council continued an overall business retention strategy for the City of Louisville in 2008. The primary purpose of the retention visits is business outreach to Louisville companies. This effort keeps community leadership in touch with the needs of Louisville businesses and allows the business to have an active voice with community leadership. COMPANIES VISITED IN 2008 Members of BRaD and City Council completed 28 retention visits in 2008, primarily focused on businesses within the urban renewal area. Those companies visited included: • 844 Main Street • Achtermann Chiropractic • Balfour Senior Care • Bank of the West • BC Properties LLC • Blue Parrot • Centennial Printing • East Park Associates- Bill Arnold • Envysion, Inc. • Fordyce Automotive • Gaiam • GHX • Home Depot • Huckleberry • Inovonics Wireless Corp. • King Soopers • Louisville Cyclery • Louisville Plaza • Louisville Tire and Auto • Lowes • Marketplace Bakery • McStain • Amterre Property Group • Safeway • Tebo Development • Transfirst • Union Jack Liquors • Village Square Shopping Center OUTCOME Listed below are comments from the retention visits of businesses providing goods or services: • While road improvements along South Boulder Road and Hwy 42 may help traffic movement, they will also seriously affect the businesses iri the area during and after construction • Awareness of the Shop Louisville campaign and efforts by the DBA to enhance downtown • Limited opportunity to expand downtown due to small and expensive site size SUBJECT AGENDA ITEM BUSINESS RETENTION VISIT SUMMARY 6
