ARCHITECTURAL INTEGRITY:
This clipped (also referred to as jerkinhead) cross -gabled house is an excellent example
of the early 20t" century bungalow type. It is a one-story home that displays subtle,
simplistic elements of the craftsman style including its low pitched roof; historically multi -
pane -over -one double -hung, grouped windows; an elevated front porch (enclosed); and
natural colored stucco cladding.
As a point of general clarification, a bungalow and a Craftsman are not one in the same.
A Craftsman is a particular style of bungalow while the bungalow itself is a form.
Craftsman homes were first popularized in California and moved east and were part of
the Arts and Crafts movement. "The first bungalows in the United States, as we might
recognize them, appeared after the Philadelphia Centennial celebrations of 1876. More
Americans became interested in applying new principles to architecture, striving to
move away from European precedents."'
The faux half-timbering and the small, low -roof addition on the rear of the home are not
original but the home retains all seven aspects of integrity including: location, setting,
materials, design, workmanship, association, and feeling.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE ANALYSIS AND CRITERIA FOR FINDING
PROBABLE CAUSE FOR LISTING AS LOCAL LANDMARK:
Under Resolution No. 17, Series 2019, a property may be eligible for reimbursement for
a historic structure assessment (HSA) from the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) if the
Historic Preservation Commission finds "probable cause to believe the building may be
eligible for landmarking under the criteria in section 15.36.050 of the Louisville Municipal
Code." Further, "a finding of probable cause under this Section is solely for the
purposes of action on the pre-landmarking building assessment grant request, and such
finding shall not be binding upon the HPC, City Council or other party to a landmarking
hearing."
Staff has found probable cause to believe this application complies with the
following criteria:
CRITERIA
FINDINGS
Landmarks must be at
701 McKinley Avenue was constructed in 1933 making
least 50 years old
it approximately 89 years old.
Staff finds the age of the structure meets the
criteria.
i Craftsman Bungalow.
