Child Abuse Awareness & Prevention Month April 2004 Whereas, child abuse and neglect are recognized as significant and pressing problems affecting the health, welfare and quality of life of children residing in Boulder County; and Whereas, victims of child abuse and neglect are known to be at higher risk for experiencing post traumatic stress syndrome, depression, low academic achievement, drug use,juvenile delinquency, teenage pregnancy and adult criminality; and Whereas, 3,190 reports of neglect and physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and were received by the Boulder County Department of Social Services, Division of Child Protection Services, in the year 2003; and Whereas, the rate of child abuse in Boulder County exceeded the rate reported in the State of Colorado and in the nation in 2000; and Whereas, it is a priority of Boulder County law enforcement agencies, the District Attorney's Office, the Department of Social Services, and Mental Health and Victim Service Providers to gain the cooperation and participation of the public in preventing future cases of child abuse and in assisting in the investigation and prosecution of suspected child abuse offenders; and Whereas, Blue Sky Bridge Child & Family Advocacy Program is committed to breaking the cycle of child abuse by bringing together professionals and agencies as a multidisciplinary team to create a child-focused approach to sexual abuse investigations and by conducting education programs in the community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Charles L. Sisk, Mayor of the City of Louisville, Colorado, along with the City Council do hereby proclaim the month of April 2004 as Child Abuse Awareness & Prevention Month and encourage all citizens to help prevent future cases of child abuse in Boulder County.
