PROCLAMATION FOR OLDER AMERICANS MONTH <br />MAY 2009 <br />WHEREAS, our community is blessed with the wisdom and grace of older individuals. <br />WHEREAS, maintaining health, relationships and sense of purpose for older adults is <br />vital to our community as they fill many social roles, such as consumers, <br />volunteers, leaders and workers. <br />WHEREAS, keeping older adults connected to the community is essential for their <br />well being and benefits us all. <br />WHEREAS, while the majority of older adults in Louisville, Colorado are thriving, a <br />smaller, yet sizeable, minority have multiple issues such as poor health, <br />limitations in daily activities and limited inadequate incomes. <br />WHEREAS, the older people will become a much larger percentage of the population <br />of Louisville as the baby boom generation ages. <br />WHEREAS, the number of older adults (ages 6o+) in Boulder County is forecasted to <br />increase from 11% of the total population to 23% of the total population <br />over the next 20 years. <br />WHEREAS, responding to our aging population will require changes in attitude, <br />cultural expectations and social policies. <br />WHEREAS, continuing to implement the county -wide "Greeting Our Future" initiative <br />at the local level by focusing on the four quadrants to: <br />Address basic needs, <br />Optimize physical and mental health and well-being, <br />Promote social and civic engagement, and <br />Maximize independence and support caregivers. <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Mayor Charles Sisk, hereby proclaim May as <br />OLDER AMERICANS MONTH IN LOUISVILLE, COLORADO and call on <br />all citizens to join with us in saluting and acknowledging the contribution <br />of Louisville's diverse, unique and vibrant older population during May <br />and throughout the year. <br />DATED this 1st day of May 2009. <br />ATTEST: <br />Charles Sisk, Mayor <br />A"6,vr <br />Nancy Va ra, City Clerk <br />
