several different families, including a physician's family and high school teacher's family.
Between 1953 and 2016, it was owned by the Martella family, who had a connection to Rocky
Flats. Since 2016, it has had three owners including the current one.
ARCHITECTURAL INTEGRITY:
The property at 1033 Jefferson Avenue contains a primary structure and attached garage. The
primary structure is a one-story structure with a projecting front porch and multiple rear
additions. "Stories in Places", a residential historic context for Louisville from 2018, lists the style
of the structure as "National," a folk style popular between the 1850s and 1930s enabled by the
expansion of railroads and access to cheaper lumber, combined with the simple, older forms of
previous decades. The National style has many different forms, including the side -gabled form
and the ornamental front gable evident in the existing structure. However, images included in
the Social History Report (attached) show the house in its earlier form, which did not include the
ornamental front gable. Overall, the earliest form of the house shown in those pictures included
the basic form of the front porch and form evident today, but with less ornamentation. The
Assessor's Card photograph from 1950 appears to show some Craftsman -style elements in the
front porch columns that are no longer present on the property. Some of the rear additions were
built in the 1980s according to the building permit file. Parts of the rear additions may have
predated the 1980s based on aerial photographs from the 1960s and early 1970s. Some of the
work on the house is evident in the 1977 Assessor's card, as well.
Figure 1. House shown circa 1909.
Figure 2. House shown in 1948.
Demolition Review, 1033 Jefferson Avenue
9
