LIBRARY NEWS <br />SUMMER READING PROGRAM <br />WRAP-UP <br />CHILDREN— `Be Creative" <br />By reading 14,500 hours, the 945 participants surpassed their <br />"Charity Challenge" goal to ensure $500 would be donated <br />by the Louisville Public Library Foundation to the Spirit <br />Horse Alliance. <br />TEENS "Express Yourself Your Library" <br />This year, 190 teens signed up for this popular summer <br />event. That represents a 22% increase from 2008. Among <br />the programs reflecting this year's theme was "Be Your Own <br />Rock Star," in which the teens learned about songwriting and <br />worked together as a group on a new tune. The teens' original <br />composition, "Chain Reaction," can be heard at <br />http: /drop. io /AndyHackbarthLibrary <br />ADULTS "Experience Colorado" <br />This year's program had 155 participants, a 12% increase <br />over 2008. Karryl created our newest piece of art, "The Page <br />Turner." which was purchased by an anonymous donor as a <br />gift to the Library. <br />Friday, September 25 7 :00 PM <br />Family Movie Night 1 "Race to Witch Mountain" (PG) <br />Tuesday, September 29 7:00 PM <br />"Chinas Economic Transition" Learn how China evolved <br />from a sleepy Communist economy to the fastest growing <br />industrial nation in the world. <br />Saturday, October 10 1:00 PM <br />"Touched by Wildlife" Bring the whole family for Jane Stan <br />field's presentation and slide show. Jane spent seven months <br />as an international wildlife volunteer, working with wildlife <br />species ranging from the small echidna of southern Australia <br />to the elegant giraffes of South Africa. Hear her stories and <br />laugh at amazing animal antics! <br />Reading Buddies <br />The Reading Buddies Program will continue in the fall. The <br />program run by teens and headed by teenager Kelsey Piper <br />pairs younger readers with older reading buddies. The pair <br />reads together and plays literacy games helping to build <br />confidence. <br />Teen Read Week <br />Teen Read Week 2009 will be celebrated October 18 -24. <br />This year's theme is "Read Beyond Reality your library." <br />Teen Services will have special activities to celebrate this <br />event. <br />Tick -or -Treat with UNICEF <br />In October, the Library will host Trick -or -Treat presentations <br />by local UNICEF volunteers. More details will be available <br />on the Library website in the coming weeks. <br />Watch for December Holiday Events... <br />The local group "Now and Then" will provide a musical <br />prelude to Louisville's Parade of Lights on December 4. The <br />Library's annual holiday reception, featuring harpist Kristin <br />Rey, will be held on December 12. <br />Fall 2009 <br />
