The sirens are activated by the Boulder Sheriff's Department
Communications Center and can broadcast both siren and voice messages. The
most likely use will be for serious weather alerts such as tornadoes and for
hazardous materials accidents.

The sirens are the Whelen WPS2910 which are omni-directional transmiting
360 degrees simultaneously rather than the acoustical highs & lows of the usual
rotating sirens. Because of its exceptional broadcast pattern, three of these sirens
work as well as four of the conventional rotating sirens. They will be mounted on 60
foot concrete poles buried with packed soil about ten feet deep. They are solar
powered and require no external utilities. Because of the pole size, excavation and
routine maintenance the pole locations must be accessible by heavy bucket trucks.
The three locations were chosen based upon broadcast coverage, property
ownership, accessibility, avoidance of utilities, and minimal disruption to the
surroundings.

:.- Harper Lake: Northwest corner of the parking lot near or at the east edge of
the river rock area; about the location of the outhouse.

:.- Pirates Park: North of the tennis courts. (Property is owned by the Boulder
Valley School District and is contracted by the City of Louisville for recreation
uses. The BVSD has tentatively agreed to amending the contract to allow the
siren pending final review of all the terms and engineering specifications.

:.- Coal Creek Golf Course Maintenance Area: South of the Coal Creek Trail
and east of the concrete bunkers.
