Statement of Interest — Louisville Golf Course Advisory Board
Coal Creek Golf course is one of Louisville's most significant assets. Having a quality golf course is a
point of pride for the community, and enhances the quality of life Louisville is known for. It brings in
direct revenue through its contract with the city, but also positively impacts sales and property taxes by
bringing golfers into Louisville from around the area and improving the property values of the city.
However, the golf business is competitive, and we need to do everything we can to ensure that Coal
Creek is a preferred destination. We need to be a good partner with golf course management and focus
on the long term viability of the golf course as a business.
I have lived in Louisville 13 years, all of it in Coal Creek Ranch. My first 9 years were on St Andrews
Lane and the past 4 years have been directly on the 4 fairway on Diamond Circle. The course is a
significant boost to the property values for all of Coal Creek Ranch, so I have a vested interest in the
success of the course.
While 1 don't golf frequently now, I have golfed for about 40 years. When I golfed regularly, I shot in
the mid 80s, so 1 have a good understanding of the game. However, I am applying for the Board based
on my education and business background, not my golfing qualifications.
My education includes 3 degrees from the University of Illinois. I have a Bachelors in Business
Administration /Marketing, a Masters in Labor and Industrial Relations, and a Juris Doctor of Law.
I'm a member of the Wisconsin State Bar. I have also trained as a mediator, was accepted to the
Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service as an arbitrator, and have completed approximately 70
hours of coursework as an executive coach.
I am currently Director of Human Resources for Ball Aerospace, but have served in a variety of HR
roles over the past 28 years. This includes extensive labor relations experience with Miller Brewing
and Leprino Foods. This included serving as chief spokesperson in contract negotiations and chief
advocate in arbitration hearings. 1 developed strong relationships with local unions represented by the
Teamsters. UAW. Machinists. and others unions at breweries, beer distributorships. can and bottle
plants, and cheese manufacturing plants across the country. I was director of HR at Neodata in
Louisville, and was responsible for supporting all customer service centers for the company. I was
Director of HR for the Sales and Marketing divisions of Coors Brewing Company across the US. 1
was VP HR at netLibrary (Boulder dotcom), Ultimate Electronics (retail), and Leprino Foods (food
manufacturing), and was responsible for all aspects of the human resources function in those
organizations. Particularly relevant to the Golf Course Advisory Board, these roles included budget
responsibilities; design and development of performance management systems; development and
delivery of training on communication, team building, and leadership; strategic planning; and
employee survey administration.
I also have other Board experience. I was appointed to a 2 year term on the Denver Workforce
Development Board by Mayor Hickenlooper, and am currently on the Board of Emergency Family
Assistance Association, serving as head of the Personnel Committee. I believe that my background
will be of benefit to the Golf Course Advisory Board. and I appreciate your consideration.
Thomas M. Deany 4/19/2010
■
16
