COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
TO: MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: WILLIAM A. SIMMONS, CITY MANAGER
DATE: September 13, 2004
SUBJECT: US /36 Interchange - Interim Improvements
ORIGINATING DEPARTMENT: Public Works Department
SUMMARY:
Given the delay in the McCaslin Blvd. Interchange project the Town of Superior initiated an
investigation as to possible interim improvements to help with traffic operations during the coming peak
holiday season. The nature of the interim improvements would include removal of the existing concrete
median, miscellaneous asphalt repairs on the bridge deck, removal of some curb gutter and medians on
McCaslin and related work. This would provide for six lanes on the bridge and three lanes onto the
bridge from both Superior and Louisville. At Monday night's study session Public Works staff and the
traffic engineering consultant working with Superior on the interchange will be present to discuss the
traffic operations with interim improvements. The traffic engineering consultant, Alex Arenello with
Leigh, Scott & Cleary, will also provide a visual simulation of traffic operations. At this point staff from
Superior and Louisville favors the option with two through lanes and one left turn lane in each direction.
Attached is an initial analysis of traffic operations for the interchange with different lane configurations,
as noted.
Superior's staff has reviewed the agreement with their Town Attorney and will present the agreement to
their Town Board on Monday, September 13, 2004 for their approval.
SUBJECT
US /36 Interchange- Interim Improvements
AGENDA ITEM
1
